Cheat Sheet for Social Media 2013 / 2014

We’ve updated this old article. Find the 2017 version here.

Ok, so below is a snapshot and cheat sheet for Social Media to round out 2013 and the start of 2014 is attached. We’ve developed this thinking about businesses and the decision making process about what platforms they should be spending time on to generate returns of investment. Note, this isn’t every platform, it is just the 5 top social media platforms (Facebook, Google+, Twitter, LinkedIn & YouTube) plus Pinterest, Instagram and Snapchat, the up-and-comer who is taking down SMS and MMS worldwide with their free online version for smart phones (smart move). We were aiming to build an info graphic around this, however we felt it better suited to an A4 Page (PDF version if you’d like to print this – Social Media Cheat Sheet &Mine) … it was also used as a handout at a recent business seminar on Social Media.

We are well aware, that there are huge opportunities across the hundreds of other performing social media sites – and we haven’t put a large focus on asian based networks either. However there is often confusion even on the basics on what social media sites companies and brands should be active on, so this simple and brief 1-pager should help keep some of the key ideas front of mind. If you’d like a good recent snapshot of social media platforms – see the Conversation Prism (below) which has a well ordered list of social media sites and platforms (as of late 2013).

(Special thanks to Brittany Prince & Rob Lawson for helping me put this together for a recent Social Media Seminar – Michael)
