Medical eCommerce Website Development – Southern Biological – Case Study

Medical eCommerce is part of the new sectors that is moving beyond traditional industrial practices to adapting digital pathways. As one of Australia’s leading suppliers in the medical/ education spaces, Southern Biological was in need of a digital alignment of their brand and online presence. The aim was to boost the functionality and look of their site for higher conversion rates.



We redesigned and redeveloped the outdated site, and built a new resource section to enhance user experience for teachers / clients. This is to make sure we can progress to the next phase; to deliver growth through collaborative content, SEO and digital marketing. 

They approached AndMine to assist with the branding, design, advertising and funnel pathways of their website. The site was built on BigCommerce, and after consideration of the budget and timeline, the best approach was to modernise the current platform, rather than to rebuild it into an enterprise platform like Magento2. This first (and easier) challenge was design. By modernising the look and feel, ensuring BigCommerce displayed mobile and desktop for aesthetics, ease of use, clear sections and most importantly products pages, the before-and-after talks for itself;

The gap in design is there was 2000 odd products, and the timeline didn’t allow us to upgrade every image. So we leveraged this to our advantage and ensure the core products of the site are migrated to the new design without the need to update every SKU.

The more challenging part was to include the new functionalities on a single platform. The 2 new key functionalities were Live Quoting for Schools and Teachers Resources (Practicals for the Classroom). We could have built multiple platforms to achieve this, such as attaching WordPress for the filtering of resources, but we are huge on convergence and clean functional solutions.

Holding the title of the #1 BigCommerce experts in Australia, we did achieve this on one single platform. This allowed both the overhead and ongoing management costs to be minimised, and marketing efforts are simplified. The Medical eCommerce space is heating up, especially with digital competition, so we needed to ensure phase 2 of the project, advertising and marketing was streamlined for both teams.
